[384] Francis Small, son of Edward Small, is marked as of the 2nd generation in America, though he was born in England. He was named for his famous kinsman, Captain Francis Champernowne. He came to America in 1632, with his father, Edward Small, when about 12 years of age. In 1648 he lived in Diver N.H., with his wife, Elizabeth Leighton. In July 1657, he bought at Falmouth, Me., of the Indian Chief, Scitterygussett, a large tract of land near Falmouth (now Portland, Me.) and named Capisic. In 1663 he was a successful attorney at Falmouth, in some of the Government squabbles of that time. He made daring voyages along the Eastern coast of Maine. In 1668 he was at Kittery, >e., and there established a trading post and house where the village of Cornish, Me., now stands. His fearlessness and honest dealings with the Indians won the confidence of Capt. Sunday, chief of the tribe with which he traded. When the treacherous Indian bands burned the home of Francis Small this chief deeded to him the famous Ossippee Lands, containing 256,000 acres. This old deed, dated Nov. 22, 16668, with the signature of a turtle, is still preserved. Francis Small sold a part of this land, but reserved to himself Ossippee proper, which constitutes the entire northern part of York County, Me. After this he was still acquiring lands, and was known in America and England as "The great land owner." When the Indian wars came on, about 1700, he went with his wife, and most of his children, to Truro, Mass., Cape Cod, and died there, or at Provincetown, Mass., with his son Daniel about 1713, age 93 years. Some writers have marred his history by saying that he fled to a safer place for fear of the Indians. But this is considered pure fabrication, and other important matters needed his attention there. Maine never had a braver or truer man. Elizabeth Leighton, wife of Francis Small, was a brave and noble woman; she was born in 1634 at Dover, N.H.
