Samuel Winchell, forth generation from Robert of Windsor, was born at
Windsor, March 15, 1711; married Sarah McNess of Harpswell, about 1738; died Topsham, February 04, 1783. His brother Ebenezer accompanied him, but subsequently returned and settled at Torrington, Conn. He settled in Harpswell as early as 1738. Another brother, John, was also with him in Maine in 1743. In 1740, Samuel removed to Topsham and settled near the Cathance Mills, about 5 miles above the village of Bowdoinham, in the Cathance River, a tributary of the Kennebec. The mills were erected by Samuel. He acquired, with Jacob Eaton, a joint title to the property by virtue of a deed from Isaac Royall, dated 15 Nov 1750. This conveyed 500 acres and all Royall's rights in said stream. Samuel seems to have become one-forth proprietor of the Cathance mill right, embracing 1100 acres. He was a prominent man in the town, and must of been a man of considerable wealth. It is said "he kept the first public house,--not a tavern,--but his house was deemed the first in town, and for it strangers used to inquire."
Samuel Winchell is said to have styled Colonel "from ye circumstances of
being a superior officer and worthy member of a fraternity" whose name is not stated.
Samuel owned a slave called Quash Winchell in whose will, dated 3 Mar.,
1788, the later named his "friends, ANnne and Hannah Winchell."
Children of Samuel Winchell were:--John, born in Harpswell, May 02, 1740: Martha, born in Topsham, May 14, 1742, was published to Benjamin Barrens of Harpswell, in May or June, 1768, who was afterwards killed in Bowdoin by a falling tree; Salome, born July 08, 1744; Samuel, born Oct 25, 1746, and James, were both drowned (though as only one body was found it was supposed the other person had been captured by the Indians); Ebenezer, born May 15, 1749; Ann, unmarried; Sarah, born in 1750, married Arthur Hunter, Feb 16, 1775; Silence, who married James Purington, of Topsham, Nov 23, 1786; Mary, who married John Given, Aug 08 1771: Hannah, born in Topsham in 1759, died there July 29, 1823, s.
