NOTE: Zachariah Alden and Henry Alden have both been incorrectly identified as sons of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins in various publications. Aside from being a descendant of John Alden, the author is also a descendant of this Henry Alden. [For information on the descendants of Henry Alden, see MD 43:21-29,133-138; 44:27-30,181-184.]

William Bradford wrote, c1650, "John Alden was hired for a cooper [barrel maker] at Southampton where the ship [Mayflower] victualed, and being a hopeful young man was much desired but left to his own liking to go or stay when he came here; but he stayed and married here." and later wrote "John Alden married Priscilla, Mr. Mullin's daughter, and had issue by her as is before related."
Extensive research has been done into the ancestry of John Alden, but nothing has conclusively been found. There are two major theories that have been presented over the years:
Charles Edward Banks, in his book "The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers", 1929, puts forward a theory that John is the son of George Alden and Jane (---) and grandson of Richard and Avys Alden of Southampton, England. Since Bradford says John Alden was hired in Southampton, this would be a logical place to start looking for Alden's. No other supporting evidence has been found, and it has been noted by many researchers that the names George, Richard, and Avys do not occur anywhere in John Alden's family. Naming children after parents and grandparents was an extremely common practice in the seventeenth century, and the absence of such a name is nearly enough evidence to disprove this theory.
The currently popular theory is that John Alden came from Harwich, Essex, England. There was a sea-faring Alden family, who was related by marriage to Christopher Jones, captain of the Mayflower. It has been suggested John Alden may be the son of John Alden and Elizabeth Daye, but this is not fully proven either. The unproven pedigree would go as follows:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
William Russell === Elizabeth (---)
John Alden === Elizabeth Russell*
John Alden === Elizabeth Daye
John Alden of the Mayflower === Priscilla Mullins
* Elizabeth Russell's brother married Sybil Jones, the mother of Christopher Jones, captain of the Mayflower.

He is perhaps the son of Anthony & Mary (Oliver) Strout
He died between Oct 1712 & 09 09 Jul 1714, Truro, Ma.
(2??)(1) on 02 Dec 1680 at Marblehead (Y/R), Sarah Picke, daughter of George & Sarah (___) Picke of Marblehead. Goerge Picke cam to Massachusetts prior to 05 Dec 1663 for on that date he purchased of Samuel Pondy of Marblehead, fisherman and his wife Anna, one end of a dwelling house in which said Condy lived. In the deed he gives his occupation as fishermen.
The name George Picke as recorded on a town list, 1674, when Marbelhead's inhabitants had "increased to such an extent" that there were 114 househoulders; at a meeting held during this year it was voted tha t"all these 15 or 16 houses build in Marblehead before ye year 1660 shall be allowed one cows common and a half".
In Samuel Quarterly Court will 09 Oct 1678-29 Nov 1679, Sarah Pick is witness to Ann Condy's will. Ann gives Sarah two porringers.
Sarah married (2)(2) before 25 Oct 1716 Joseph Collins of Eastham. He died there ca 1723. She died at Cape Elizabeth and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Portland, in a lot with her son Christopher. (much of the above based on the original research by Dr. Leonard F. Tibbetts of South Yarmouth, MA).
He settled in that part of Eastham which was set off as Truro in 1709. (As he apparently originated from Truro, County, Cornwall, perhaps he was instrumental in the naming of that new town, Truro, MA in 1709). On tradition states that he was shipwrecked in this country and stayed. He was in fishing business and some of his sons were known as "whale fisherman". His widow petitioned the Barnstable County Probate Court for administration of his estate on 09 Jul 1714. Barnstable County Probabte Court records which contain a document in the estate of Christopher 1 Strout identifying his widow on 25 Oct 1716, as "Sarah Collins", late Sarah Strought, Administrix to ye Estate of Schistopher Strought, late of Cap Cod in Said County, now deceased and now wife of Joseph Collins of Eastham in ye County of Barnstable".
RESEARCH
Recent research (at Truro, County Cornwall, England in Sep 1986 by Kathrine (Dickson) Brown) suggest that Christopher 1 Strout came from Elgoshayle parish/town, near Truro, County, Cornwall. The following extract from Library in Truro, International Genealogical Index microfiche sheet #A0217 may refer to Christopher Strout of Truro, Cape Cod, MA:
"James Strowte (sic)
Anthony Strowte (sic), son of James Strowte, christened Egloshayle 22 Aug 1602. Anthony Strowte married Mary Olyverin Egloshayle 12 Sep 1631.
Christopher Strout, son of Anthony Strout & Mary christened Egloshayle 12 Dep 1631. Christopher Strout married ____
Anthony Strout, son of Christopher, christened Egloshayle 25 May 1657.
Anthony Strout, son of Christopher, christened Egloshayle 06 Oct 1664.
Digory Strout, son of Christopher, christened Egloshayle 13 Jan 1666.
It is possibel that Christopher 1 Strout of Cape Cod was much older than Sarah Picke, married in 1680. If he were 49 years older when he married Sarah, then he was about 84 years old when he died ca 1715. Sarah could have been a second wife.
