William Rogers born at Londonderry, Ireland, Oct 1702; died at Georgetown, Me., Feb 23, 1763, age 61 years. A tradition handed down in this family states that William Rogers was married before his coming to America, and that his first son, George Rogers, was born on the sea, and rocked to sleep in a tortoise-shell cradle. But the records given below are to be relied upon instead of the tradition.
The Will of William Rogers of Georgetown, Me., husmandman, dated March 13, 1760; proved May 11, 1763; states that he lived "on the eastern side of Waney grant marshes." It mentions his wife Ruth, his sons George, Thomas and Hugh ("Hugh who has been the staff of my old age") William, John and Robert, and daughters Jean Kendall, Margaret Rogers, and Ann Reed. He speaks in this Will of "a plan of lands in the hands of Brother McCobb." This Will makes his wife, and sons, George and Hugh, Executors of his Will. The wife Ruth declined to serve as Executrix. See Lincoln County, Me., Probate Records, page 8.
William Rogers lived in Londonderry, N.H., for some time after his
marriage, and is said to have removed to Georgetown, Me., about 1737, where he was very industrious and helpful citizen.
