[332] George had already gone to California by 1849 with gold fever.
[333]
George as a boy had a very strong aversion to school, and was in
consequence bound out by his mother to one Enoch Winship, when eleven years
old. He repented his folly in very short measure. He was naturally of a roving
disposition, and quite a young man went on a trip to St. Helena in a sailing
vessel. He was the first of the family to go to the gold fields, but returned
later and settled in New Bedford, where he studied law. He finally returned to
California, and became a very successful practitioner. He came east again in
1869, with the purpose of settling, but prospects were not flattering, and he
finally retirned to California.
